The RSAF participated in National Day Parade for the first time, with a RSAF officer as parade commander.
In 1987, LTC Timothy De Souza became the first RSAF officer to be appointed parade commander for the National Day Parade.

The state flag flypast also involved the Super Pumas for the first time, led by MAJ Chia Sin Kwong.
